Sending money to Lesotho has become easy with the implementation of Mukuru and many other methods (western union) of transferring money to the loved ones from abroad the country.
In the past, people were sending money to Lesotho via standard bank, FNB, Nedbank, Capitec and many other banks I don’t know of. If you are from overseas, you don’t have to worry about whether there is a Western Union available in Lesotho. Western Union is available for people who are overseas.
The downside with banks was that their withdrawal charges were too high, that is why e-wallet technologies have been implemented. Nowadays you can send money to your loved ones in Lesotho from anywhere, whether you are overseas, or you are in South Africa, you can make a transfer of money to Lesotho without worrying about charges.
In this article, you are going to learn how you can send money to Lesotho using Mukuru, Western Union, banks and many other methods or technologies which have been implemented to transfer money from any country to Lesotho.

Transferring money in Lesotho
I have already mentioned that in the past, people made money transfers in Lesotho via banks. However, with new technologies being implemented, it is now easy to send money within Lesotho. In the country, we have Mpesa, Ecocash, e-wallet, postbank khetsi and many other mobile money banking.
Mpesa

Mpesa is a Vodacom Lesotho’s e-wallet that allows you to save, withdraw and send money to any Vodacom Lesotho’s customer who has registered. Almost in every district in Lesotho, there is mpesa agent where you can deposit your money into mpesa for later usage or use it as a mobile banking for those who don’t have bank accounts or for those who don’t qualify to have them.
Ecocash

Ecocash is Econet Lesotho’s e-wallet. With ecocash, you can be able to send money within Lesotho to anyone who has registered for ecocash. You can also receive money from anyone who is registered for ecocash. Ecocash in Lesotho is not used by a large proportion of the population, as to why, I am not sure. But I think it is because Vodacom is the mostly used telecommunication service for cellphones in the country.
With the implementation of e-wallet banking, some companies are even paying their workers using this type of payment. The reason being that e-wallets are a bit cheaper when withdrawing money. These e-wallets have reduced costs of withdrawals, and old people save their grands using them. Grandchildren used to steal money form their grandparents because somehow those people are vulnerable. I am sure you get the picture.
Khetsi

Khetsi is Lesotho PostBank’s e-wallet technology. I have never used Khetsi but from what I have heard and seen, Khetsi is somehow similar to Vodacom Mpesa or Ecocash. There is an agent where you can be able to deposit and withdraw money from your Khetsi account just like with Mpesa or Ecocash.
When it comes to charges, I am not so sure about it, but you can go try it, the only downside of it is that it is still new, so it is not yet available in many places in the country. However, you can experiment with it, who knows, you might love it.
Mpesa, Ecocash, and Khetsi system
These 3 e-wallet technologies have the same system. For you to use them, you have to register for them, you can go to a nearest shop of Vodacom, Econet or Postbank, they will help you with it. You will need to provide your national ID when you go register.
After registering, you go to a nearby agent to deposit money money into your account. From there, you can send and receive money from other people. You can even cross receive money from Mpesa to Econet and vise versa. But be warned that the costs are a bit higher if you make a cross transaction between two different e-wallets.
How to send money to Lesotho via shoprite

When I started this article, I mentioned that the only way to send money to Lesotho in the past was through banks and the charges were a bit high when you had to withdraw it. But nowadays things have changed; people can send money to their loved ones in Lesotho through Shoprite. Sending money to Lesotho via Shoprite requires a Mukuru account, that way, your loved ones will be able to get that money through Shoprite.
The only thing I hate Shoprite money or Mukuru money is that long queue. Always where people receive Mukuru money, there is a long queue, that is why I hate it. Another downside is that it takes a long time before that money gets withdrawn.
You can withdraw a mukuru money at Shoprite stores or at Usave shops in Lesotho. Getting money through this technology saves your money from being taxed too much. It much more like Lesotho e-wallets I discussed above.
How to send money to Lesotho via Pep

From what I have seen, Mukuru is often found at Pep store in South Africa. For you to be able to send money to Lesotho via pep, you have to have a Mukuru account. If you haven’t but you want to send money to Lesotho, you need to start first by registering.
From there, you follow these steps:
- STEP 1: REGISTER REGISTER VIA WHATSAPP OR USSD Or dial *130*567# (FREE) and select option 1 “Sign up for Mukuru”
- STEP 2:CREATE AN ORDER
- STEP 3: MAKE PAYMENT AT YOUR NEAREST PEP
- Bring the correct amount and Pay@ number to any PEP Stores
- Your cellphone number will be your reference number
- Cellphone and internet payments are also accepted (no cash deposits at the bank)
- Your order is valid for 24 hours
- Transfer the exact amount as in your order
STEP 4: RECIPIENT TO COLLECT CASH IN DESTINATION AT VALID CASH-OUT POINT
From there, you are good to go. The person you sent money to will be able to receive it in Lesotho.
How to send money with banks
One of the old school ways of sending money to Lesotho is via banks such as FNB, Standard bank, Nedbank, Lesotho Postbank, Capitec and many other banks. You can send money to your loved ones via a bank transfer. However, bank charges are a bit higher than that of e-wallets. If you don’t to make your loved ones to wait in the long queue at the merchants, you can send that money via bank.
How to send money from overseas (USA) to Lesotho
If you are overseas or in a country which doesn’t use the same currency as Lesotho, you don’t have to worry because there is a Western Union where currency exchange is done. This place is found in Pioneer Mall Maseru.
This means that you don’t have to worry about where to exchange another currency in Lesotho, if you go to Pioneer Mall, you will exchange any currency to Maloti.
