Leaps & Bounce (AfriBeauty) is one of Lesotho cosmetic companies owned by a Mosotho youth; Miss Selloane Motsamai. Leaps & Bounce started in 2017 and it has been operating since then. However, Miss Motsamai was in partnership with Botle Skincare brand.

As of this writing, Leaps & Bounce is now an independent company. Miss Motsamai decided to be a sole proprietor. This company specializes in production of cosmetics, and offering trainings on how to manufacture cosmetics using indigenous or herbaceous plants to individuals and associations.

Miss Selloane Meriam Motsamai was born in the rural of CANA in Berea district where she was raised by her grandmother. After completing her COSC in 2013 at Ts’ekelo High School, she went to work in South Africa where she was involved in a cosmetics manufacturing company. 

In 2016 she came back from April 2016 to September 2017 She worked at LEKUKA JOB CREATION Company, a cosmetic manufacturing company based in Maseru Lesotho where she gained experience and learned how to take care of clients.

What is the benefit of starting your own business?

One of the pains of being employed is that you spend years working for your boss, you never get a chance to improve your skills. However, some people do find time to improve their skills. What can you say is the biggest benefit of starting your own business?

Miss Motsamai:

 “I love being my own boss. This is one of the benefits you won’t get if you are working for someone else. Besides that, one of the benefits of starting your business is that you are in control over formulae. I love helping people, I am able to change other people’s lives when I own my own business. Hiring other people brings a financial breakthrough in other people’s lives.

You gain a lot of experience while running your own business. I mean, you have to learn bookkeeping, marketing, and many other things such as branding. This means you get to grow your skills. You also see improvement in your self-confidence and self-control.

How did get exposure for your business?

Miss Motsamai:

I got exposure through social media and newspapers. If you are not marketing your services on social media, my friend you are losing a lot. You have to get the word out there via social media marketing. I also worked with NGOs and other brands, I have already mentioned some of the brands and NGOs, which is how I got exposure for my business.

What qualities should I possess if I want to be an entrepreneur based on your experience?

Miss Motsamai:

If you want to be an entrepreneur, you need the right skills for your business. To get those skills, you have to learn or get trained. Once you acquired the right skills, enroll in business and entrepreneurship track.

Don’t forget to do a lot of research. Once you are operating, ensure that you buy from factories whose products are tested and documented, this way, you know that your customers are safe.

Do you think education is the most important thing?

Miss Motsamai:

Well, Education is the key to success. We need to be educated because it helps you on many things in business.

What do you think the government should do to help youth companies?

Miss Motsamai:

Government must invest in youth companies, do follow ups, try to bring investors so that Lesotho economy can improve.

What challenges did you encounter along your entrepreneurial journey?

Miss Motsamai:

At first, it was a lack of skills on how to run a business. I only knew about manufacturing. I encountered capital problems; I couldn’t find investors or sources of capital. I also struggled to get materials while starting and while packaging my products; lots of things needed to be sourced.

How did you overcome your problems?

Miss Motsamai:

Problems are still there, but as for business skills, I had to enroll in business and entrepreneurship courses. I also enrolled in project management course. That is how I overcame some of my challenges.

When did you get a breakthrough in your business?

Miss Motsamai:

“I got a breakthrough in 2020, but COVID-19 hit hard on us; the prices of raw materials went high, and this affected our business. I think most businesses were affected by this pandemic. Many people lost jobs; COVID-19 did a lot of damage. But we are still fighting hard, have survived, and are ready to move forward.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years to come?

Miss Motsamai:

I want to expand my business and be a recognized businesswoman locally and globally. I want to own big manufacturing firms. ”

Miss Motsamai:

“As long as you are producing high-quality products, and you are marketing your products well known, you can make money selling Lesotho-made products. I mean, people all over the world are interested in Lesotho products.
