It is a refreshing thing to see our youth join hands together to start something productive. Together we are strong but divided we fall. This has proven to be strong; Berea Media Association radio station is yet to be established in the community of Ha-‘Mamathe.

One of the importance of a radio station is to make listeners aware of current affairs happening in their communities. It can be stolen livestock, accidents, new developments coming to the nation etc. In the past, and currently people listened to Moafrika FM, Molisa ea Molemo FM, Harvest FM, PC FM, Radio Lesotho, Ts’enolo FM, KEL radio, Maria radio and etc.

Before I proceed with this article, I want to stress a very important point that. Radio broadcasting services in Lesotho play a very important role. It is through radio that people advertise their businesses. It is through radio that the government addresses the nation. It is also through the radio stations that the government knows what is happening in our communities.

I am sure now you understand how much a radio station can influence people. Now let’s see how Berea Media Association started.

How was BMA STARTED?

While talking to one of the youth involved in this establishment that is yet to start working, Mr. Maja Moshoeshoe indicated that Berea Media Association was started by a group of Basotho youth mostly from ‘Mamathe community. This group was motivated by the recurring reported crime that was happening in the community of Ha-‘Mamathe. They wanted a means in which they can report such incidents quickly; radio broadcast.

Our country is faced with a high unemployment rate especially amongst the youth. This means that many young Basotho men and women went to school, and got their degrees but there are no jobs. As a result of this, poverty knocks in many families because people are unemployed. This is one of the reasons why ‘Mamathe youth decided to form this establishment.

One of the reasons that led to BMA being formed was that old people in the community of ‘Mamathe were uninformed about many current affairs in their villages. There is no radio station covering current affairs in that area. BMA is going to close this gap and ensure that ‘Mamathe becomes a safe place; The Police shall be alerted quickly of whatever incidents that may be taking place once it is established.

You find that our youth only know things they are taught from school and at home. We are a lazy nation to read. BMA is going to enroll on programs that teach people how to do new things, how to start new establishments on their own as a way of closing unemployment gap.

BMA vision and mission

It is a normality that almost every association should have a mission and vision. You have to make people aware what you are all about, what you stand for. Berea Media Association too has its own mission and aims.

• To be a leading broadcasting association company in Lesotho
• In five year from now, we would like to have covered all the national events, big or small and all events in the interest of our audience.

Mission Statement

• To publish education content, entertainment, current affairs, sports, politics news and any other related content that is not against the government authorities.

Where will BMA be located?

For a business to successful operate, it has to have a location. Land is the most valuable asset of a company. Based on the documents provided, BMA shall be located at Ha-‘Mamathe Berea Lesotho. The team has been given a form C lease.

How shall ‘Mamathe community benefit from BMA?

• Fast reporting of crimes
• Youth businesses around ‘Mamathe will be able to advertise their business without having to incur transport costs to go to town.
• Listening to programs that equip people to do new things
• To learn about the current affairs happening in ‘Mamathe community
• To enjoy broadcasting that comes from local radio station which is run by their children
• Job creation to ‘Mamathe community

When will it begin to broadcast?

Based on the current preparations, BMA will start to broadcast at around April 2023. However at the moment they are running some campaigns in villages and churches. These campaigns are aimed at making the community that there is a new development that is going to take place in their community.
